On Friday the Trump administration announced that it was cutting $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University. The cut came following a series of tumultuous protests in the past two weeks at the Ivy League.
This most recent round of protests began on February 26, when Barnard students staged a sit-in within Milbank Hall. The protesters stated reason for the sit-in was to show solidarity with two of their fellow university students who were expelled for disrupting a “History of Modern Israel” class on January 21.
More students staged another protest outside of the gates of Barnard on the day following the sit-in, February 27. The protests continued into the next week when (on March 4) former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was interviewed in an event hosted by the Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life and the Columbia/Barnard Hillel.

The next day student protesters formed a second sit-in within the Milstein Library. School faculty attempted to evacuate the protesters announcing that the school had received a bomb threat. After the students refused to leave, Barnard called in the NYPD to forcibly remove the students. This culminated in nine protesters reportedly being arrested.
The final protest came on Thursday, March 6, outside of the Columbia gates. While there was a police presence, the rally came and went without incident.
