Chaos ensued in Brooklyn as competing pro-Israel and pro-Palestine protests resulted in a series of fights and one arrest made by the NYPD.
On February 18, the pro-Palestine group PAL-Awda organized a protest against an event by an Israeli real estate agency in Borough Park, a section of Brooklyn with a large Orthodox Jewish community.
Writing on social media they stated: “Zionists in Brooklyn are hosting another real estate event where they will attempt to sell land in occupied Palestine, as part of their ongoing effort to ethnically cleanse the land of its indigenous inhabitants.”
This and other social media posts advertising the protest were quickly picked up on by pro-Israel social media accounts who called for a counter-protest.
PAL-Awda also drew criticism from various congressional members including Ritchie Torres and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The two protests were separated on opposite sides of 14th Avenue by barricades set up by the NYPD, who were on the scene and attempting to keep the both rallies from obstructing traffic.
On the PAL-Awda side protesters were waving Palestinian flags, beating drums, and chanting “There is only one solution, intifada revolution.” Members of the pro-Palestine crowd were also carrying banners and posters which read “Liberation and Return”.
Despite the police’s efforts, on multiple occasions they were forced to separate the dueling rallies after several physical altercations ensued between the pro-Palestine group and the Orthodox Jewish locals.
The latter of which were waving Israeli flags and Trump flags while singing “the nation of Israel lives” in Hebrew.
